I’ve been escaping to virtual worlds as long I’ve kown about them. My parents got internet access in 1999, so I missed the entire MUD-train and most of Ultima Online, but a friend of mine got into the Asheron’s Call beta and showed it to me.
I was hooked instantly. I’ve always been a sucker for computer RPG’s, and finding one that I could play with other people was amazing.
Me and a couple of friends once used an entire night talking about how cool it would be to play The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall in multiplayer (yes, we are nerds. Why?). And here it was. The promised land. Here we could be knights and rogues, wizards and barbarians and fight monsters in a LIVING, CHANGING WORLD!
